          Appeal No. 2002-1983
          Application No. 08/954,826

obviousness, we cannot sustain the 35 U.S.C. § 103 rejection of
          claims 45, 51 and 57 as well as claims 47, 48, 50, 53, 54, 56,
59, 60 and 62, dependent thereon, over Bhattacharjya and Komatsu.
               With respect to the rejection of claims 46, 49, 52, 55, 58
and 61, the Examiner further relies on Hung for teaching the
specific number of additional lattice points based on the
computer storage constraints (answer, page 12). However, Hung
provides no teaching related to the claimed conversion table for
converting printing data from a gray scale color space to the
data of a different color space based on a smaller number of
lattice points in a pre-conversion table and fails to overcome
the deficiencies of Bhattacharjya and Komatsu as discussed above.
          Therefore, the 35 U.S.C. § 103 rejection of claims 46, 49, 52,
          55, 58 and 61 cannot be sustained.

                                         -8-
