                     The third embodiment employs a single laser light source (32), a single                           
              photodetector (38), a beam splitter (34), two objective lenses (36, 46), and two                         
              controllable shutters (51, 52) for selecting the appropriate objective lens.

                     The fourth embodiment employs a single objective lens 46 and a wave front                         
              correcting lens 54, which is movable into and out of the light path between the beam                     
              splitter (34) and the objective lens (46).

              fifth embodiment employs two optical systems, each including, inter alia, a laser light
