Appeal No. 97-0773 Application No. 08/101,391 This is an appeal from the decision of the examiner finally rejecting claims 23-28, which constitute all of the claims remaining of record in the application. The appellant's invention is directed to a vascular access system. The subject matter before us on appeal is illustrated by reference to claim 23, which reads as follows: 23. A vascular/venous access system comprising: (a) a flexible catheter having a distal end, a proximal end, and an axial bore extending therethrough, said catheter being configured for use in central applications; and (b) a needle cannula disposed within the bore adjacent the distal end of the catheter with the sharp end of the needle cannula extending outwardly beyond the distal end of the catheter and the opposite end of the needle cannula extending through the wall of the catheter between the distal end and proximal end of the catheter.
