                                               BACKGROUND                                                     
                   The appellants' invention relates to golf balls having a low rate of spin upon club        
            impact (specification, p. 6).  A copy of the claims under appeal is set forth in the              
            appendix to the appellants' brief.                                                                


                   The prior art references of record relied upon by the examiner in rejecting the            
            appealed claims are:

                   Claims 18 to 23 and 27 to 32 stand rejected under 35 U.S.C. § 102(e) as being              
            anticipated by Sullivan.                                                                          


                   Claims 18 to 29 stand rejected under 35 U.S.C. § 102(e) as being anticipated by            
            or, in the alternative, under 35 U.S.C. § 103 as obvious over Horiuchi.                           


                   Claims 18 to 29 and 33 to 37 stand rejected under 35 U.S.C. § 103 as being                 
            unpatentable over Shama in view of Horiuchi.
