          Appeal No. 2005-0784
          Application No. 10/138,315
In the above discussed modification proposed by the
examiner, the resultant folded booklet would contain only a
plurality of folds which are parallel to the single glue path of
the modified Lyon method (e.g., again note the examiner’s
aforequoted conclusion that it would have been obvious to fold
the resultant booklet of Lyon “about folding lines that are
parallel to a glue line” (answer, page 4) and again see Figure 3b
of DeLise). While Lyon’s unmodified method of manufacturing
multiple booklets via multiple glue lines may include folds that
are transverse as well as parallel to the glue lines, the applied
references do not support a conclusion that it would have been
obvious to alter this method so as to manufacture only a single
booklet using only a single glue line while somehow maintaining a
plurality of folds which are both parallel as well as transverse
to the glue lines. To the contrary, as properly emphasized by
the appellants, DeLise explicitly teaches away from such a
modification at lines 26-31 in column 1 (“Combining parallel
folds and cross folds on a large printed sheet is a complex
operation requiring parallel folding machines and separate cross
folding machines. Accordingly, it would be desirable to convert
even larger printed sheets into folded outserts by using parallel
          folds only”).
