            movies directly from his/her own television set, the invention is a                       
            full interactive entertainment network, wherein a viewer may order,                       
            on demand, movies, video games, television shows, and other video                         
            content programs from his/her home.  In particular, what is claimed                       
            is a technique for supporting on-demand media rentals controlled by                       
            a server system, wherein the server system is used to maintain an                         
            indicator of a rental time period and an associated media content.                        
            When a client, through which the media content has been rented,                           
            attempts to download the media content, the server system                                 
            determines whether or not to download the media content based on                          
            whether or not the rental period has expired.                                             

                  Representative independent claim 26 is reproduced as follows:                       

                  26. A method comprising:                                                            
                  maintaining on a server, video content that may be served to a                      
            client device;                                                                            
                  receiving at the server, a request from the client device to                        
            rent the video content for a specified rental time period;                                
                  storing at the server, an indicator of the rental time period;                      
                  transmitting the video content to the client device one or                          
            more times during the rental time period;                                                 
                  determining that the rental time period has expired; and                            
                  refusing to transmit the video content to the client device                         
            because the rental time period has expired.
