          Appeal No. 2003-1401
          Application No. 08/814,401

external segments. Claim 1 specifies that the first connector is
adapted to engage a portion of a separate treatment catheter
extending distally from the first connector, while claim 8 sets
forth that the first connector is engagable with a corresponding
fitting on treatment catheter for engaging the treatment catheter
and having the treatment catheter extending distally from the
          first connector.

Read in light of the underlying specification, we comprehend
claim 1 and 8 as denoting that the position of the first
connector relative to the external and internal segments effects
a catheter insert having the external segment external relative
to the first connector and a treatment catheter. With the above
understanding of the claim content in mind, we turn now to the
          evidence of anticipation.

The patent to Forman teaches an infusion guide wire (Fig. 1)
provided with an occlusion balloon 264 and a connector 261 for
providing inflation fluid to the balloon via a lumen 252. With
the connector 261 being outboard of the proximal 254,
intermediate 256, and distal 258 portions of the wire, the Forman
