Plaxico Burress

Even Second Amendment haters must be scratching their heads at this one. Two years in prison for second degree criminal possession of a weapon and second degree reckless endangerment. Wow! Is his offense of the same magnitude as that committed by Michael Vick? No. Regardless of the law, on a basic fairness level, how do you send a man to jail for two years for accidentally shooting himself with a concealed weapon, illegal or otherwise? Sure, if he shot someone else, I would understand. But he shot himself!! Is New York any safer with Plaxico Burress off the streets for two years? I doubt it. What a waste of taxpayer money.

Only Bloomberg seems to think this is a good idea. He’s a stickler for enforcing the law against gun possession. It used to that this could be plea bargained down but this was changed. A sort of reaosn would be: You don’t wnat people causing accidents. The guin had oruiginally been licensed and he didn’t conceal from the club that he had a gun. He just didn;t have a holster and didn’t know what he was doing. In most such cases a person will indeed probably only hurt himself.

But Bloomberg, although he didn’t exactly make the decision here – he only maybe supported the toughening of teh law and he backs up his police commissioner and the DA – thinks that the more law enforcement there is the better things will be.

Yes, this does not really make sense. Plaxico Burress basically already had punished himself, and the thing taht made it a serious crime was basically a technicality, even if he would never have been granted permission to take a gun into New York City.
