A method of inhibiting proliferation of cells which comprise the steps of : (a) obtaining isolated Vpr protein or a functional fragment thereof; and (b) contacting cells with an amount of said Vpr protein or a functional fragment thereof effective to inhibit cell proliferation, wherein said cells are T cells and/or B cells and/or monocytes.
