Appeal No. 2002-1710 Page 2 Application No. 09/023,441 printer that recognizes multiple formats (e.g., PCL, PostScript, PPDS, GL, Impress) is more versatile than one that recognizes only a single format. (Spec. at 1.) Accordingly, the appellants' invention downloads an operating system from a host to a printer whenever the operating system resident in the printer is incompatible with the format of data to be sent from the host. (Id. at 2.) More specifically, a host identifies the format associated with a print job. The host queries the printer to learn which operating system is loaded therein. (Appeal Br. at 2.) If the print job requires an operating system different from that residing in a memory of the printer, the host downloads the appropriate operating system thereto. (Id. at 2-3.) All operating systems stored in the memory are overwritten with the operating system from host. Alternatively, the printer, rather than the host, determines the format associated with the print job. (Id. at 3.) A further understanding of the invention can be achieved by reading the following claim. 1.
