BACKGROUND The invention at issue on appeal tracks and propagates updates in a "message- driven system." In a message-driven system, the state of a component may depend on the state of other components. (Spec. at 1.) More specifically, a component may be a "guardian" or a "dependent;" the state of a dependent depends on the state of a guardian. (Id. at 4.)
