          Appeal No. 2003-0750
          Application 09/310,650

arranged knowledge base disclosures of Nagao and Wical. We find
no indication from the Examiner as to how and in what manner the
fractal database teachings of Krawchuk, directed to an informa-
tion storage management system, would be combined with the
hierarchical knowledge database systems of Nagao and Wical to
thereby arrive at the claimed invention. In our view, the only
suggestion to combine the teachings of Nagao, Wical, and Krawchuk
comes from Appellants’ own disclosure, and not from any teaching
or suggestion in the references themselves. We further note that
we find no disclosure in Krawchuk which would overcome the
previously discussed deficiency of Nagao and Wical in disclosing
hierarchically arranged semantical units “which are similar
across hierarchies,” a feature also present in independent
          claim 98.
