Michigan Compiled Laws § 257.1313 Mechanic Trainee Permit; Supervision Of Mechanic Trainee; Mechanic Trainee Training.

257.1313 Mechanic trainee permit; supervision of mechanic trainee; mechanic trainee training.

Sec. 13.

If a person is unable to obtain a certificate as a specialty or master mechanic as provided in this act, and that person desires to become a specialty or master mechanic, he may make application for a mechanic trainee permit on the form prescribed or approved by the administrator. The administrator shall issue or approve a mechanic trainee permit to an applicant who qualifies under the rules promulgated for that purpose. A person who qualifies as a mechanic trainee may retain that status for a period of not more than 2 years. A mechanic trainee employed by a motor vehicle repair facility shall be required to work under the direct supervision of a specialty or master mechanic during the full time of his employment. The administrator shall by rule establish and operate a mechanic trainee training program designed to provide the training necessary to become certified under this act. Instead of establishing and operating the program, the administrator may appoint schools, academies, or other similar establishments to engage in mechanic trainee training if those establishments, schools, or academies meet the criteria established by the administrator, after consultation with the department of education and the United States department of labor, bureau of apprenticeship and training. The establishments may be designated by the administrator to engage in a continuing education and training program for specialty and master mechanics.
