A composition for the treatment of epithelial damage in a mammal comprising a pharmacologically active retinoid and pharmacologically active DHEA wherein the combination is effective in preventing or reversing damage to the epithelium due to environmental oxidative agents and wherein the proportion of retinoid and DHEA is sufficient to overcome the undesirable side effects of each composition when used alone.
