Appeal No. 96-3564 Application 08/274,133 BACKGROUND The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for displaying text on a computer screen in a "dark on white" fashion, and particularly displaying text with a normal mode and a highlighted mode on the screen at the same time. The method and apparatus employ a highlight mode (second mode) where the text is black-on-white, and a normal mode (first mode) where the text is gray-on-white. The background stays the same in both modes which are concurrently displayed on the screen. The background has the highest luminance and the foreground changes from gray to black. This change increases the contrast/difference between the background and foreground, but decreases the overall luminance on the screen. The luminance of the black-on-white is less than that of the gray- on-white. Appellants have indicated that claims 10-33 stand or fall together. (Brief at page 3.) Independent claim 26 is representative of the invention and reproduced as follows: 26.
