Appeal No. 96-3854 Application No. 08/027,872 upon the surface of the filter medium. The extent of particulate deposition may be observed on the surface of the filter medium through a viewing port 32. See col. 2, lines 61-71. Madden further discloses that after the sample has been observed, valves 22 and 18 are re- opened to establish fluid flow through the chamber 24 over the surface of filter medium 26 for the purpose of cleaning the surface of filter medium 26 between sampling periods (col. 2, lines 29-38 and col. 3, line 73 through col. 4, line 3). It is well-established that before a conclusion of obviousness may be based on a combination of references, the examiner must show that some objective teaching or suggestion in the applied prior art, or knowledge generally available in the art, would have led those of ordinary skill to combine the teachings of the references to arrive at the claimed invention.
