Appeal No. 98-1012 Serial No. 08/117,342 detects the total coliforms. When enzymes from coliforms act on the fluorogen, the coliforms fluoresce under long wave ultraviolet light, something non-coliforms would not do. (Specification, p. 11, lines 1-7.) E. coli, which is also a coliform, would exhibit a similar fluorescence. (Specification, p. 11, lines 11-13.) Aside from the detectors and a buffer, the medium additionally comprises one or more agents that encourage the growth of E. coli and coliform bacteria; suppress the growth of Gram-positive bacteria; and, suppress the growth of non-coliform bacteria.
