THE INVENTION The invention is directed to various processes for the preparation of carbapenem intermediates. In one aspect of the invention a decarboxylation reaction occurs. In a second aspect, a nucleophilic reaction on a substituted Meldrum’s acid moiety results in a ring opening to form a carboxylic acid moiety and substitution of a nucleophile on the remaining carbonyl moiety.
