Router processing circuitry within the router searches a routing table for a routing table entry for a detected destination for the data packets. More particularly, Appellant asserts at pages 4 through 6 of the specification that, by associating a cost with each entry in a router table, virtual circuit connections can be utilized as back-up connections for a primary network. Claim 1 is illustrative of the invention and reads as follows: 1.
