Appeal No. 1998-0818 Application No. 08/319,143 On page 9 of the specification, Appellants describe the amplitude encoded filter as having "a transmissivity which increases along radial lines extending from a central portion of the filter." On page 12 of the specification, Appellants identify that the phase encoded filter can be either a binary phase filter, a ternary filter or a amplitude encoded binary phase filter. The coding of these three filter types is described on page 15 of Appellants’ specification. Independent claims 11 and 13 are representative of the invention and read as follows: 11.
