A spinal implant comprising: a hollow shell having an exterior surface; and a plurality of pillars projecting from said exterior surface, wherein said implant is adapted for inserting between two naturally adjoining spinal vertebrae, and wherein said exterior surface has a plurality of holes therethrough regularly interspersed among said pillars to permit bone growth therethrough for fusing said naturally occurring vertebrae together. 35. A spinal implant comprising: a hollow shell having one or more exterior surfaces about a longitudinal axis through said shell; an a plurality of immobile pillars projecting from each of said one or more exterior surfaces, wherein each of said one or more exterior surfaces has a plurality of holes therethrough to facilitate bone growth therethrough. 41. A spinal implant comprising: a hollow shell having an exterior surface; and a plurality of pillars projecting from said exterior surface, wherein said exterior surface has one or more holes therethrough, and wherein said holes have a diameter or width substantially less than the diameter or the width of said pillars, and further wherein said implant is adapted for insertion between naturally adjoining vertebrae for fusing said naturally adjoining vertebrae. 42. The spinal implant of claim 41, wherein said pillars are integrated with said exterior surface of said implant. 43.
