Until Joan left Junichi, Nakamura made the checks payable to Joan, because the custom in the Takao families was for the women to handle the money. On its 1988 and 1989 tax returns, Toraya treated the payments to Joan and the checks payable to cash and endorsed by Junichi as purchases in the cost of goods sold section of the returns. Toraya's general ledger shows that the 1989 beginning inventory for the Berkeley restaurant in the amount of $19,917 remained on its records when that restaurant was closed on June 30, 1989.
