The invention relates to a cosmetic or dermatological composition having depigmenting activity and for topical application to the skin. The composition comprises, in a cosmetically or dermatologically acceptable vehicle, an effective amount of the depigmenting substance consisting essentially of a benzofuran derivative. Claim 1 is illustrative of the claimed invention and reads as follows: 1.
