Appeal No. 1996-3362 Application No. 08/258,601 DECISION ON APPEAL This is a decision on appeal from the final rejection of claims 3 through 6, all of the claims pending in the present application. Claims 1 and 2 have been cancelled. The invention relates to a device and method for controlling cursor motion on a display screen of a computer. In particular, the invention provides two modes of cursor operation, an absolute mode and a relative mode. In the absolute mode, the cursor position on the display screen is determined by the operator's finger position on the touch screen. In the relative mode, the cursor position on the display screen is determined relative to the operator's finger touch screen position. The selection between these two modes is done by the operator pressing against the screen by a force that exceeds a threshold. Independent claim 5 is reproduced as follows: 5.
