Apparatus for reconstructing an image with additional quantization levels of signal resolution from two quantized non-dependent representations of the image at the spatial resolution of one of the representations, comprising: means for converting one of the quantized non-dependent representations to the same spatial resolution as the other representation; and means for combining the converted and non-converted representations to form a combined representation with additional quantization levels of signal resolution.
