Appeal No. 1998-0259 Application No. 08/391,817 rejected. Appellants' invention relates to a connector for optical fibers. In particular, with reference to Figure 1C, substrate 20 is covered with encapsulant 30 having a feature 40 (i.e., V-groove) therein. Optical fibers 15 and 16 are placed in the feature (i.e., V-groove), and are thus retained in a fixed orientation with respect to the substrate. Representative independent claim 1 is reproduced as follows: 1. A connector for an optical fiber comprising: a rigid substrate having a substantially flat upper surface; an encapsulant covering the upper surface of the substrate; and a feature, disposed within the encapsulant for receiving at least part of the optical fiber therein and retaining the optical fiber in a fixed orientation with respect to the substrate.
