          Appeal No. 2000-0584
          Application No. 08/845,673

          III. The 35 U.S.C. § 103(a) rejection of claims 55 through 58 as
being unpatentable over the German reference in view of Ries
Claims 55 through 57 depend ultimately from claim 51 and
require that the base member include filling materials (claim 55)
comprising fiber materials (claim 56) selected from a specific
grouping of materials (claim 57). Claim 58 depends ultimately
from claim 51 and requires heat conducting materials within the
periphery of the plastic disc extending from the outer
circumference of the plastic disc over a maximum range of
20 percent of the radial thickness of the grinding disc. As
tacitly acknowledged by the examiner, the German reference does
          not meet these limitations.
Ries discloses a grinding wheel composed of a resinoid
abrasive rim bonded to a resinoid non-abrasive center. The non-
abrasive center may include glass fibers and stainless steel wire
screen to improve its strength and to control its shrinkage
characteristics and thermal coefficient of expansion (see column
          2, lines 18 through column 3, line 11; and column 4, lines
          50 through 63).
The appellant has not specifically disputed the examiner’s
conclusion (see page 3 in the final rejection and page 5 in the
answer) that Ries would have suggested adding fibers of the sort

                                          9
