Appeal No. 2002-0328 Application No. 09/250,324 Representative independent claim 1 is reproduced as follows: 1. An electronic display structure comprising: a circuit board having a top surface and a bottom surface and including circuitry for providing a plurality of electrical signals; a picture element (pixel) structure having a predetermined area including: a patterned first electrode, coupled to the top surface of the circuit board to receive a first electrical signal of the plurality of electrical signals; a patterned display material having a bottom surface and a top surface, the bottom surface being in close proximity to the first electrode; and a second electrode, positioned in close proximity to the top surface of the patterned display material; and a connecting via extending through the pixel structure from the top surface of the circuit board to couple the second electrode to receive a second electrical signal of the plurality of electrical signals, wherein the first patterned electrode and the patterned display material are sized and arranged such that the connecting via does not interfere with the patterned first electrode or the patterned display material.
