Appeal No. 2003-0435 Application No. 09/263,921 matches, also referred to as modes, to the reference block and compares the average modes to the reference block and generates errors for each, column 7 lines 6-31. The best mode is then determined by comparing the errors of each mode to determine which mode has the lowest absolute error, column 7, lines 48-50. Thus, we find that both Greenfield et al. and Wang et al. teach determining a best match between a block in a first image and a block in a second image. Both references teach averaging images as part of the process of determining a candidate for best match. Both references teach selecting a candidate based upon either a difference or error between the two images.
