A sample holder comprising: a multiplicity of islands, wherein the islands non-removably connect to one another through a substrate, the islands protrude from the substrate, and the islands comprise sample support surfaces adapted to support a sample; and a sump that separates adjacent sample support surfaces to inhibit transport of a sample between adjacent sample support surfaces, wherein the sump is a recessed area between adjacent sample support surfaces. 32. The sample holder of claim 30 wherein the sample support surfaces are less than about 10,000 :m2. 34. The sample holder of claim 30 wherein the islands are geometrically non- uniform. 36. The sample holder of claim 30 wherein the sample support surfaces comprise a coating. 38. The sample holder of claim 30 wherein the sample support surfaces comprise a polymer.
