Appeal No. 95-1217 Application 08/039,674 the motivation for combining the numerical inversion of Crimmins et al. with Corwin’s automatic target recognition scheme and Fukumizu’s neural network system is offered in Crimmins et al., which states that "the extension of machine vision to industrial or military operations requiring the detection of a more general classes of shapes and/or patterns has met with limited results." See Crimmins et al., col. 1, lines 24-26. Crimmins et al. discloses a method and apparatus for automatic shape recognition in an image that is represented by a matrix of digital data signals.
