A handle includes a logical block sequence number, which indirectly references a region within a physical block of memory. The handle is dereferenced inter alia by determining the physical block that corresponds to the logical block sequence number. (Spec. at 13.) Storing a logical number in the physical block would obviate the need to translate the logical block number to a physical block number. Accordingly, the appellants’ reliance on this limitation for patentability is not persuasive. Second, the appellants argue, “the Hoel patent only describes one numbering system for logical patches ....” (Appeal Br. at 16.) The examiner responds, “[t]he basis of any map between logical and physical entities requires identification of the two entries which [sic] correspond. Hoel addresses this at a number of places ....” (Examiner’s Answer at 8.) We find that claims 16-18 do not define over Hoel.
