Appeal No. 2003-2049 Application 09/003,090 135 through 137 have been canceled. Invention The invention relates to fluorometers, and more particularly to a system and method for performing automated fluorescent measurements. See page 1 of Appellants’ specification. Figure 1 is a diagram illustrating a representative functional architecture of a fluorometer according to one embodiment of Appellants’ invention. See page 8 of Appellants’ specification. Referring to figure 1, the fluorometer includes a processor 104, an assay device 124, a communications interface 120, a ROM chip socket 132, and a ROM chip 136. See page 10 of Appellants’ specification. ROM chip 136 contains program instructions, calibration curves, control data, or other information which can be interfaced to the fluorometer. See page 12 of Appellants’ specification. An important functionality which can also be provided by ROM chip 136 is that different tests can be provided on different ROM chips such that reprogramming of the fluorometer to perform a variety of different tests can be accomplished simply by replacing ROM chip 136. See page 14 of Appellants’ specification.
