                                     BACKGROUND                                       
               Appellants' invention relates to a front end translation               
          mechanism for received communications.  An understanding of the             
          invention can be derived from a reading of exemplary claim 1,               
          which is reproduced as follows:                                             
               1. A method of providing received electronic communications            
          at a data processing system in a human language desired by a                
          recipient of said electronic communication, said method                     
          comprising:                                                                 
               intercepting an incoming communication at said data                    
          processing system, when said incoming communication is provided             
          in a first human language, which is different from the desired              
          human language; and                                                         
               responsive to said intercepting step, dynamically                      
          translating said incoming communication into said desired human             
          language.                                                                   
               The prior art references of record relied upon by the                  
          examiner in rejecting the appealed claims are:                              
          Lyberg                          5,546,500           Aug. 13, 1996           
          Boucher et al. (Boucher)        5,884,246           Mar. 16, 1999           
                                   (filed Dec. 4, 1996)                               
               Claims 1, 2, 5, 7, 9-16, 18-25, and 27-35 stand rejected               
          under 35 U.S.C. § 102(e) as being anticipated by Boucher.                   
               Claims 8, 17 and 26 stand rejected under 35 U.S.C. § 103(a)            
          as being unpatentable over Boucher in view of Lyberg.
