Appeal No. 2006-0962 4 Application No. 10/117,981 including a bowl portion for receiving the impeller and an inlet side for intake of material into the pump bowl, an intake or suction cover plate (21) mounted at the inlet side of the pump casing and having an inlet aperture (32), wherein the edges of the spiral blade are located closely adjacent the inner surface of the intake plate facing the pump bowl. As seen in Figures 2, 3 and 5, the inner surface of the intake plate (21) includes a plurality of inclined grooves (50) which are intended to cooperate with the sharp edge (46) of the impeller vane (42) to provide a cutting or shearing function on solids, including stringy or rubbery materials, contained in the sludge. In addition to the shearing function associated with the grooves (50), it is indicated that they are inclined at a steep angle with respect to the blade so that the grooves and spiral blade cooperate together to force to the periphery any solids which might otherwise jam between the blade and the intake plate (21).
