        Appeal No. 2006-0962 5
        Application No. 10/117,981

Arbeus discloses a centrifugal pump for pumping sewage water
having a pump housing (1) with a cylindrical inlet (2) and an
impeller (3) having one or several strongly sweptback vanes (5)
that extend part way into the inlet and have a portion extending
transverse to the axis of rotation of the impeller. As noted in
column 3, lines 47-48, one or several curved notches or grooves
        (8) may be provided in the wall of the pump housing extending
over a surface (7) opposing the impeller (3). The grooves (8)
have a special configuration which cooperates with the leading
edges (6) of the strongly sweptback impeller vanes in such a way
that pollutants are feed in the direction of the pump outlet
(col. 3, lines 52-54). The special configuration of the grooves
is shown in Figures 3 and 4 and described in column 3, line 55 to
column 4, line 20. At column 3, lines 31-35, Arbeus indicates
that “[a]n important principle with the invention is that the
pollutants in the pumped liquid are not disintegrated by cutting
means” and that to the contrary a more robust construction is
used to ensure that the pollutants are feed outwards to the
periphery. Arbeus cites as one of the advantages of the
invention therein that “[t]he need for a specific and permanent
or replaceble [sic] cutting means is eliminated as the feeding
function takes care of the pollutants and bring [sic] them away.”
