In particular, a customized remote control is provided by allowing a user to configure and purchase a personally customized remote control via a Web site. Representative independent claim 22 is reproduced as follows: 22. A method of customizing a remote control comprising: receiving at an Internet Web site data that functions to identify at least one of a plurality of consumer electronic devices whereby the Internet Web site uses the data to access a plurality of pre-programmed sequences each comprising instructions for causing one or more of the plurality of consumer electronic devices to perform a plurality of operations when a configurable key of the remote control is actuated; displaying to a user at a client computer in communication with the Internet Web site the plurality of pre-programmed sequences; and accepting from the user at the client computer a selection of at least one of the pre-programmed sequences for downloading from the Internet Web site for use in the remote control.
