         Application No. 10/309,007
         American Hoist & Derrick Co., 730 F.2d 1452, 1458, 221 USPQ 481,
         485 (Fed. Cir. 1984).
With respect to representative claim 1, Appellants argue in
the Appeal Brief that the Buening reference does not disclose the
limitation of an armature winding being constructed by connecting
five winding phase portions into an annular shape to be rectified
by a five phase full wave rectifier. Particularly, at pages 11
and 12, Appellants state the following:
Fig. 16 of Buening illustrates a five phase machine in
which alternating current output induced in a star-connected
five-phase armature winding is rectified by a five-phase
full-wave rectifier. Buening does not, however, disclose or
suggest that alternating current output induced in a
pentagon-connected five-phase armature winding is rectified
             by a five-phase full-wave rectifier.
                  Furthermore, although Buening mentions electromotive
force (EMF) of the five-phase machine (e.g., in paragraph
[0045]), this is EMF in a five-phase machine including a
             star-connected five-phase armature winding. Rectifying
alternating current output induced in the pentagon-connected
             five-phase armature winding by the five-phase full-wave
rectifier, however, is not disclosed or suggested by
             Buening.
Thus, Buening fails to disclose or suggest
             incorporating the pentagon-connected five-phase armature
winding with the five-phase full-wave rectifier.
Appellants argue that Buening fails to disclose a five-
phase full-wave rectifier in conjunction with an annular
arrangement of five phase windings. That is, Buening
discloses a five phase full rectifier in connection with a
star arrangement of five phase windings (see Figs. 16 and
17), but not with an annular arrangement of five phase
windings (see Figs. 6 and 9). In fact, there is no specific
                                      6
