Appeal No. 2006-2752 Application No. 10/309,007 American Hoist & Derrick Co., 730 F.2d 1452, 1458, 221 USPQ 481, 485 (Fed. Cir. 1984). With respect to representative claim 1, Appellants argue in the Appeal Brief that the Buening reference does not disclose the limitation of an armature winding being constructed by connecting five winding phase portions into an annular shape to be rectified by a five phase full wave rectifier. Particularly, at pages 11 and 12, Appellants state the following: Fig. 16 of Buening illustrates a five phase machine in which alternating current output induced in a star-connected five-phase armature winding is rectified by a five-phase full-wave rectifier. Buening does not, however, disclose or suggest that alternating current output induced in a pentagon-connected five-phase armature winding is rectified by a five-phase full-wave rectifier. Furthermore, although Buening mentions electromotive force (EMF) of the five-phase machine (e.g., in paragraph [0045]), this is EMF in a five-phase machine including a star-connected five-phase armature winding. Rectifying alternating current output induced in the pentagon-connected five-phase armature winding by the five-phase full-wave rectifier, however, is not disclosed or suggested by Buening. Thus, Buening fails to disclose or suggest incorporating the pentagon-connected five-phase armature winding with the five-phase full-wave rectifier. Appellants argue that Buening fails to disclose a five- phase full-wave rectifier in conjunction with an annular arrangement of five phase windings. That is, Buening discloses a five phase full rectifier in connection with a star arrangement of five phase windings (see Figs. 16 and 17), but not with an annular arrangement of five phase windings (see Figs. 6 and 9).
