Appeal 2007-2116 Application 10/318,000 INTRODUCTION The claims are directed to an apparatus and method for optimizing the schema1 definitions of a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory. Claim 1 is illustrative: 1. A computer-implemented method of optimizing the performance of a directory server having an allowable listing of schema definitions that may be used to access data on the directory server, comprising: for a first client device, receiving a first client listing of object classes required by the first client device’s applications; comparing the first client listing of object classes required to the allowable listing of schema definitions; generating a first client listing of schema definitions based on the comparison of the first client listing of object classes required to the allowable listing of schema definitions; and storing the first client listing of schema definitions in association with an identifier of the client device; wherein, when a request is received from the first client device, the first client listing of schema definitions is utilized instead of the allowable listing of schema definitions.
