Appeal No. 97-1843 Application 08/092,574 discloses that the gel compositions can produce sufficient medicinal effects without being washed away by tears. Kogyo, page 2, lines 64 to 71. (6) Kogyo further discloses that the gel compositions cause no discomfort to the patient since they are free from oleophilic base ingredients. Kogyo, page 2, lines 82-84. (7) Kogyo discloses that when gel compositions that have a viscosity of from 1,000 to 10,000 cps are applied to the eye, the mucous membrane of the eye absorbs the drug rapidly. Kogyo, page 2, lines 84-87. (8) Kogyo discloses that when sustained efficacies are desired, a small amount of sodium chloride can be added to the gel compositions to “delay” the breakdown of the gel when the compositions are applied to the mucous membrane of the eye. Kogyo discloses that although the addition of a small amount of sodium chloride to the aqueous solution of the gel compositions coverts the gel to a liquid, greatly reducing its viscosity, the amount of carboxyvinyl polymer can be increased to compensate for this reduction of viscosity. Kogyo, page 2, lines 107-125. (9) Godtfredsen discloses that fusidic acid and certain salts thereof are well known antibiotics which are effective against a number of pathogenic microorganisms.
