                Appeal 2007-3992
                Application 10/347,867
                carbide content 30. (Page 11, lines 25 and 26; Figures 1 and 3).” (Br. at 7:
internal citations are to the 867 specification.)
                13. The solid black regions labeled 21 and 23 in modified Figure 1,
shown supra, correspond to the TiC-steel regions of the garniture tongue.
                (867 Application at ¶ 47, 10:25–26, and at ¶ 49, 11:25–26.)
                14. According to specification, the friction arising from the passage of the
tobacco rod over the rod guide surfaces can result in rapid abrasion of the
garniture tongue due to the relatively high mechanical stress.
                (867 Application at ¶5, 2:6–11.)
                15. Further according to the specification, long service lives are achieved
for the garniture tongues by using a steel alloy with a high titanium carbide
                content:
because, surprisingly, tobacco or tobacco particles slide along
the steel alloy with high titanium content very well so that in
particular at high rod speeds of over 100 m/min, there is a very
low friction coefficient between the garniture tongue and the
tobacco particles, even with differing moisture values. A lower
wear of the garniture tongue results from the high sliding
properties or the low friction coefficient.
                (867 Application at ¶ 8, 2:23–28.)

special emphasis on various tongues designed to accommodate various
liquids, referred to as "gum," that tend to be squeezed out of the cigarette
filler material (generally referred to as "tobacco"). (Labbe at 1:4–21.)
