The Examiner argues that one of ordinary skill in the art would 2 have been motivated to provide the Iwamura user with a direct indexing to 3 the identities of the contents of the scene image, whereby the indication 4 cursor, when pointed to an Iwamura object, will return object identification 5 from the pre-stored Montgomery item buffer contents at that pointed to 6 location (Final Rejection 4 and Answer 4). 7 12. The Examiner also argued that motivation to provide item 8 buffering in a three-dimensional graphics environment is explicitly 9 described in Montgomery (Answer 4 and 9). 10 13. Applicants argued that even if the combination describes all of the 11 claimed elements, that there is no motivation to combine Iwamura with 12 Montgomery (Br. 14). 13 14. Specifically, Applicants argue that the motivation provided by the 14 Examiner is legally flawed, since it is not found in the references of record 15 (Br. 14). 16 15. Applicants also argue that the z-buffering system used by 17 Iwamura (stated as being described at e.g., col. 8, l. 53) is not compatible 18 with, nor would Iwamura benefit from, the Montgomery system using an 19 item buffer (Br. 14 and 17-18). 20 Iwamura 21 16.
