           3                             PRINCIPLES OF LAW                                                
           4         Anticipation requires a showing that each limitation of a claim is                   
           5   found in a single reference, either expressly or inherently. Perricone v.                  
           6   Medicis Pharm. Corp., 432 F.3d 1368, 1375, 77 USPQ2d 1321, 1325 (Fed.                      
           7   Cir. 2005). Even a single prior art species within the patent's claimed genus              
           8   reads on the generic claim and anticipates. Atlas Powder Co. v. IRECO Inc.,                
           9   190 F.3d 1342, 51 USPQ2d 1943, 1945-46 (Fed. Cir. 1999). A small genus                     
          10   can be a disclosure of each species within the genus. In re Petering, 301                  
          11   F.2d 676, 682, 133 USPQ 275, 280 (C.C.P.A. 1962); see also Bristol-Myers                   
          12   Squibb Co. v. Ben Venue Labs., Inc., 246 F.3d 1368, 1380, 58 USPQ2d                        
          13   1508, 1517 (Fed. Cir. 2001) (“[T]he disclosure of a small genus may                        
          14   anticipate the species of that genus even if the species are not themselves                
          15   recited.”).  Also, a reference may anticipate even when the relevant                       
          16   properties of the thing disclosed were not appreciated at the time.  Abbott                
          17   Laboratories v. Baxter Pharmaceutical Products Inc., 471 F.3d 1363, 1369,                  
          18   80 USPQ2d 1860, 1863 (Fed. Cir. 2006); Titanium Metals Corp. v. Banner,                    
          19   778 F.2d 775, 782, 227 USPQ 773, 778 (Fed. Cir. 1985).                                     
          20         References must be considered in their entirety and not limited to                   
          21   specific examples contained in them.  In re Fracalossi, 681 F.2d 792, 794                  
          22   n.1, 215 USPQ 569, 571 n.1 (CCPA 1982); In re Lamberti, 545 F.2d 747,                      
          23   750, 192 USPQ 278, 280 (CCPA 1976).
