The invention relates to a process for making 2-amino-6-halo-9-[2,3-disubstituted-cyclobutyl]-purines. 2. The invention also relates to converting the purines to known antiviral agents, e.g., [1R-(1",2$,3")]-2-amino- 9-[2,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)-cyclobutyl]-1,9-dihydro-6H-purin-6-one. 3.
